Let’s Pick: Intro to Bluegrass Jamming

Plug yourself into the local roots music community with Intro to Bluegrass Jamming! This 10-week course aims to teach new bluegrass musicians the format and “rules” of a bluegrass jam session. Our primary goal is to break down the various aspects of bluegrass jamming – playing rhythm, taking leads, verbal and non-verbal cues – and give participants the necessary skills to join in their local sessions, band scrambles, and festival jams.

Open to all acoustic musicians – voice, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, bass, dobro, harmonica.

Pre-requisites:

  • comfortable playing open chords, moving between chords, and strumming basic rhythms
  • can play common major scales (G/C/A/D)
  • note: familiarity with your instrument is necessary for this class, familiarity with bluegrass is not!

Participants need a notebook and recording device – your phone works great! Guitar and banjo players need a capo.

The class meets immediately before the weekly Concord Open Bluegrass Jam (Thursdays at 7:30 pm), students are encouraged to stick around and participate!

Let’s Pick is a three part series running throughout the 2023/24 school year. Courses include: Intro to Bluegrass Jamming, Bluegrass Solo Workshop, and Bluegrass Vocal Workshop.
