Rhythmic Laboratory: Level 1

For young musicians who want to sharpen their rhythmic skills and have fun doing it. Rhythmic Laboratory helps students feel rhythm in their bodies, hear it with clarity, and use it creatively in their own music-making.

Designed for kids with some prior music experience, this class blends call‑and‑response, ensemble rhythm playing, and guided improvisation. Students build confidence as they explore pulse, time signatures, subdivisions, syncopation, and rhythmic patterns in an engaging, hands‑on way.

Along the way, they strengthen not only their musicianship but also focus, coordination, and creative expression — benefits shown by research to support children’s cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development.

Perfect for beginner and intermediate instrumentalists or vocalists ready to level up their rhythmic toolkit.

*Prerequisite: have already taken some music lessons (on any instruments/voice) and have minimal knowledge of musical notes/rhythm (such as whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes).

Level: Beginners/intermediate

Curriculum:

• Time signatures and pulse (2/4; 3/4; 4/4; 5/4 and 6/8),
• Rhythmic exercises, and basic music reading (focused on music note values and rhythm)
• Divisions and subdivisions (eight notes, triplets, sixteen notes, and sixtuplets),
• Basic syncopation,
• Rhythmic ear training (call and response),
• Rhythmic patterns,
• Creative developments and basic rhythm improvisation,
• Body coordination through rhythmic exercises and ensemble rhythm playing.
