Native American Flute Class: Level II — Deepening Your Voice and Style

The Native American Style Flute offers a unique path to musical expression, blending personal creativity with deep tradition. The Level II course is a dynamic extension of the introductory class, designed for students ready to move beyond the basics and truly find their voice on the instrument.

This course emphasizes practical skills like improvisation, ensemble playing, and developing a unique performance style. Limited to just 10 participants, this intimate setting ensures personalized feedback and a collaborative learning experience.

Who Should Enroll?

This course is open to experienced players ready to strengthen and deepen their skills. You qualify to join if you meet one of the following requirements:

1. You successfully completed the Level I (Introduction to Native American Style Flute) course taught at CCM or another institution.
2. You are already comfortable playing the Native American Style Flute and can:
   • Play confidently within the pentatonic scale.
   • Know one or two basic songs.
   • Improvise to a simple backing track for 2–3 minutes.

Key Learning Themes

Level II offers a deep dive into advanced musical concepts and personal development on the flute. While some topics extend Level I material, there will be room to adjust the curriculum to the wants and needs of the participants.

The primary themes include:

• Developing Improvisations: Expanding melodic and rhythmic ideas spontaneously.
• Duets and Ensembles: Learning to harmonize and play collaboratively with others.
• Playing with Rhythm: Integrating backing tracks and playing alongside various instruments.
• Working with Tablature: Strengthening skills with both standard and number tablature.
• Learning Someone Else’s Song: Methods for accurate note and style acquisition.
• Melody vs. Accenting: Understanding the difference between carrying a main tune and adding harmonic support.
• Exploring Your Flute’s Purpose: Identifying how you want to use your flute (e.g., for personal reflection, public performance, or service to others).
• Finding Your Voice and Style: Cultivating the unique tonal and expressive qualities that define your playing.
• Ear Training/Listening Skills
• Songwriting: Exploring using motifs, working with song structure, and developing your improvisation into a song.

Course Logistics

Required Instrument: Participants must have an A minor flute. If you do not yet own one, you may purchase an instrument through CCM. Recommended: Participants are encouraged to bring any other keys of flutes they may own to enrich the ensemble playing experience.
