Composition is the opportunity for the student to use their imagination and develop the capacity to express their emotions with music. Composition lessons provide the young composer with the tools needed to translate their creative musical thoughts into written, notated music. Through writing for several different instruments, the students will learn about form, harmony, and counterpoint, as well as critically analyze masterworks by the great composers.
Each student will compose a minimum of three pieces a year, and each of these pieces will get performed at a CCM recital by CCM faculty. Prior to each recital, the composition students will participate in a studio class in which they will share their work with the other composition students. Students must be at least eight years old, have completed two years of instrument instruction, and be able to read music.
