Age 5-8

Kids will tap into the world of musical play by exploring all the instruments of the strings, piano, and woodwinds families. To begin their appreciation for music and building skills in this nurturing and fun environment, students participate in activities such as rhythmic and creative movement and singing in addition to playing the instruments.

Age 9-12

Future young musicians who have not yet picked up an instrument have the opportunity to explore each one up close and personal with expert group instruction in strings, piano, and woodwinds. Additionally, students will gain basic musicianship skills, such as rhythm, pulse, pitch, and reading to prepare them for their journey in music on any instrument they choose going forward.

By the week’s end, your young student may just find the instrument they adore and start their lifelong love of music!

  • Summer Workshop Descriptions

    Woodwinds

Kids will start their morning with the most varied family of instruments: the woodwinds! They will explore what makes each woodwind unique in its tone and timbre, and begin to learn techniques for how to hold the instruments and use their breath to produce the sounds.

    Piano

Instructor Kitty Cheung-Evans gives kids a tour of the keyboard, where they will learn names of the keys, chords, and other basics of piano playing. They will have the visual aid for learning pitch that only piano can offer, introducing basics of music theory.

    Violin and Viola

Kids delve into the complexity and beauty of the upper strings with instructor Emma Gies. They will learn how to hold the instrument and bow, how to distinguish the four open string pitches, and navigate the instrument to produce the sound.

    Cello

Minyung Suh’s cello workshop offers kids the opportunity to immerse themselves in the lower voice of the string instrument family, where they will learn the basic positions of the instrument and bow, the four open string pitches, plucking, and bowing technique.

    Voice

This vocal workshop aims to get kids familiar with their own voices, the most natural musical tool that our bodies possess! They will sing tunes together, planting the seeds to become collaborative musicians, while also developing ear training skills.

    Dalcroze

Dalcroze refers to a pedagogy that uses a playful approach to learning music with movement. This method introduces musicianship concepts like rhythm, pulse, and melody in a social and imaginative way. Students embody music joyfully through creative games, improvisation, and expression.
