Discover the captivating arc of transformation in music with Concord Conservatory of Music’s own pianist and speaker, Jackson Carruthers joined by guest violinist Sarah Whitney. Together they will show how a single musical idea evolves and expands, much like our own personal paths from novice learning to expertise. Through discussion and live performances, Jackson vividly illustrates how music transforms in real-time and over the course of time, offering an enriching and relatable experience for all.

Praised by the Washington Post for her “marvelous violin acrobatics,” Sarah Whitney is an innovative violinist celebrated for her musical versatility as a performer, teacher, and speaker. She has appeared on stages worldwide as a soloist and collaborative artist, and as a founding member of the string quintet SYBARITE5, she performed over 1,000 concerts, including at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, with three albums reaching the top ten on the Billboard Charts. She also performs on the electric violin and has been featured on-stage with artists like Adele and Ellie Goulding. Fiercely dedicated to bringing fresh ideas to classical music, she founded Beyond the Notes, an innovative concert series, and works as a Career Coach for Musicians, helping them navigate their careers. Sarah performs on a violin made by J.B. Vuillaume in 1850.

 

Grateful for the opportunity to dedicate his life to playing the piano, Jackson Carruthers is a passionate musician celebrated for his versatile command of a wide range of genres, from classical to gospel, jazz, blues, rock, and pop. As a highly trained pianist, he holds multiple degrees, including a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University, and has shared his expertise as a faculty member at prestigious institutions like the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Beyond his technical prowess, Jackson is a dedicated improviser who believes in the importance of creativity and exploration at the piano, a philosophy that shapes both his performances and his teaching. He is committed to sharing his joy for music and helping others discover a world of endless possibility at the keys.
