Enjoy the captivating and innovative sounds of Harmolodic Jazz, a style pioneered by the legendary American musician and composer Ornette Coleman.
The concert will feature guest musicians, percussionist Johnathon Birch, keyboardist Dave Bryant, electric guitarist David Fiuczynski, bassist Anderson Mirafzali, as well as CCM faculty member and saxophonist Tsuyoshi Honjo.
Harmolodic Jazz integrates harmony, movement, and melody in equal measure, and draws inspiration from diverse cultures and traditions. Coleman’s groundbreaking Harmolodic Jazz fuses rock music with microtonal elements from the Middle East, Asia, India, and Eastern Europe.

CCM believes that music education is a lifelong journey that enriches the mind, the body, and the soul. We also believe that anyone who wants to take that journey should be able to do so. That’s why we constantly adapt our offerings to suit the entire community, including those with diverse needs, through programs such as our Tones of Fun Developmental Music Class.
Good Teaching Requires Willingness to Learn
Serving the complete community requires ongoing investment in professional development. Our instructors are committed to keeping pace with the latest trends, techniques, and research in music education across a range of needs.
As one example, we hosted a workshop with Rhoda Bernard, Managing Director of the Berklee Institute for Accessible Arts Education. Rhoda shared innovative strategies and frameworks for teaching students with disabilities, along with a list of resources our staff can use for further exploration. She explained that each student’s diagnosis is unique, and that we must determine how we can best support individual students in the ways that they learn. This means being adaptive with our tools, and taking away the barriers to learning.
CCM flute instructor Weronika Balewski was pleased to discover that Rhoda’s methods were in harmony with CCM’s existing approach. “I really appreciated the idea that we don’t have to turn our teaching methods upside down,” Weronika said. “We can just do more of the good teaching that we already know how to do.”
Some Methods Are Universal
Weronika, a specialist in early childhood education, including Dalcroze Eurhythmics, further noted that Rhoda’s suggestions aren’t exclusive to teaching kids with special needs — they can work in all classrooms. “I liked Rhoda’s phrase ‘necessary for some, helpful for all,’ ” Weronika said.
She cited Rhoda’s suggestion to keep kids engaged and in synch by using color-coding and a written agenda in all classes. “I’ve been thinking how this could be the thing that helps my distracted classes focus, regardless of whether there are students with special needs in the room or not,” Weronika said.
A Good Musical Journey Never Ends
CCM piano instructor Kitty Cheung–Evans said another valuable lesson she took from the workshop was to let the process play out and not try to force things. “It takes time for students to understand the teacher’s expectations,” Kitty said, “as well as for teachers to appreciate each student’s different interests and talents to make their musical journey successful.”
Not only does a successful musical journey have no timetable, it also has no set destination — for either the student or the instructor. “It’s learning about the student and oneself at the same time,” Kitty said.
