Cassie Kollman

Cassie Kollman is a contemporary vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader specializing in vocal improvisation. She excels in various musical genres and teaches jazz, R&B, blues, soul, pop, musical theater, and classical. Her teaching style is fun, compassionate, kind, and rooted in the intention to develop strong musicianship.

Cassie Kollman believes that for singers to have the most fulfilling experiences possible, they must have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of music and be well-prepared to succeed in the musical environments they want to be part of.

“My intention as an educator is to help students identify their artistic goals and move towards them through technique and voice function development, evolving study and composition tools, and working together to cultivate a sense of confidence in their musicianship and artistic identity,” says Cassie.

She places particular emphasis on ear training, developing effective study and reading strategies, and using accessible and efficient practice tools. Cassie believes that confidence grows as musicianship develops, and she is committed to creating an encouraging, non-judgmental, and purposeful learning environment for her students.

Music is a powerful tool for connecting with ourselves, our community, and our contemporary culture. Cassie Kollman’s educational philosophy is that everyone who wants to make music can and should. She aims to guide students to find their most rewarding path in the music field. This involves introducing new repertoire, vocal styles, and artistic possibilities to inspire creativity and spark curiosity. Cassie helps students seek meaningful performance opportunities and supports the development of their authentic singing voices.

Cassie uses the Somatic Voicework™ methodology (LoVetri Method) to help students develop healthy and free vocal function. She believes that understanding vocal mechanics leads to authentic and creative musical expression. Cassie enjoys vocal improvisation in a range of styles, including scat singing, pop riffs, and blues inflections, and offers students opportunities to explore improvisation.

Cassie brings a wealth of teaching experience, including leading workshops, and providing music lessons and leading a music/art class for students with special needs in Guatemala. In addition to her extensive music teaching background at various organizations in Massachusetts and Virginia, she has also taught Spanish to students from pre-K through eighth grade and worked for several years in youth nature education programs in Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Cassie is fluent in Spanish and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Mary Washington, as well as a Master of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Music (Voice) from Longy School of Music of Bard College. She has completed Level I and Level II Somatic Voicework™ Vocal Pedagogy Training (LoVetri Method) and Level I Orff Schulwerk Music Education Pedagogy Training.

Cassie exclaims, “Outside of teaching and performing, I love riding my bike!” In addition to biking, she enjoys live music, meditation, running, swimming, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

Cassie is also a voracious reader. She and her partner David, both declared foodies, live in Somerville with their two cats and enjoy gardening and cooking together.

Back To Faculty
"I understand that learning to make music can be a fun, challenging, exciting, vulnerable, and sometimes scary process. As an educator, my goal is to meet each student where they are and to nurture their self-confidence in their own artistry and musicianship. I aim to provide them with the tools, inspiration, compassion, and encouragement they need to grow as musicians and stay engaged in their creative development, especially during times when the process isn’t as enjoyable."
