Minyung Suh

Minyung Suh believes in the power of storytelling through music and helps his students create narratives to bring their pieces to life. He also highlights the importance of performance experience, promoting recitals, mock performances, and imaginative exercises to build confidence.

“I am truly happiest when I see my students do well, learn, and grow,” says Minyung. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help them build character through consistent, disciplined work on their weaknesses, not just in music, but in life.”

Minyung Suh is a passionate and dedicated cello instructor whose deep love for music is evident in his teaching. He engages with his students by playing alongside them, expanding their musical horizons, and encouraging them to explore the full potential of their instruments. Minyung’s teaching style integrates musicianship and musical understanding with technical mastery, grounded in a functional approach to sound production. He focuses on the physical principles behind sound, guiding students to organize their bodies to achieve their desired musical effects.

In his lessons, Minyung emphasizes connecting theory and notation to aural and physical experiences, often incorporating singing and solfège. He encourages students to listen to and analyze recordings of various cellists, deepening their understanding of the instrument and its possibilities. To make practicing both enjoyable and effective, he advises setting manageable goals and exploring creativity, such as playing in unconventional positions or assigning characters to musical goals.

Minyung holds both a Bachelor and Master of Music from Boston University. He has taught at various schools, coached chamber music and adult instrumental camerata classes, and served as the cello sectional coach for the Boston University All-Campus Orchestra.

Outside of teaching and performing, Minyung enjoys reading, spending time with friends, and occasionally swimming.

"As a teacher, I’m most fulfilled when I see my students thrive—growing in their love of the music and playing the cello, in addition to mastery of the instrument and expressing themselves through their music-making."
