Dr. Jei Yern Ryu joins the Concord Conservatory of Music with a teaching philosophy centered on the belief that music is far more than reading notes — it is a powerful way to tell stories, express emotions, and connect with others. Just as an actor brings a character to life, Jei helps her students bring music to life through feeling and interpretation. She strives to create a positive, encouraging space where students are reminded that there isn’t always one “right answer” in music, empowering them to embrace trial and error and grow into confident, independent musicians.

A dedicated scholar and performer, Jei began studying piano at six, receiving foundational training at Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School before earning her Bachelor of Music from Seoul National University. She went on to complete both her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan. In her studio, she emphasizes strong technical and musical foundations while teaching students to listen deeply. She especially values the piano for its unique ability to weave melody, harmony, and rhythm together into a complete, standalone experience.

Jei’s artistry is backed by an impressive competitive background, with accolades from the Segye Ilbo and Hankook Ilbo Competitions in Korea, the Seoul National University Concerto Competition, the World Piano Competition, and the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra’s Young Piano Competition. She has served as a faculty member at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and currently teaches at Powers Music School while actively performing with ensembles across New England.

Jei’s work at CCM is driven by the joy of guiding students through the patience and persistence learning an instrument requires. To her, helping a student discover the lifelong companionship of music is the most fulfilling part of her work.
