Cello
Ensemble Coordinator

Steve Marotto works hard to connect his students with music on multiple levels. “I try to help students build a strong foundation of musical knowledge and appreciation by emphasizing pedagogy and technique, but also giving them room to explore things that may be outside the box. I believe in teaching theoretical aspects of the music, so the students can better grasp how and why their music sounds the way it does.”

Steve brings a unique blend of experiences to his teaching practice. “I have studied and performed a wide variety of music in my career, from contemporary classical & third stream music to jazz and Americana. I believe that exposure to a wide range of composers and genres will inspire the student to expand their musical comfort zone and ignite passion for what they do.”

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Stephen plays regularly with groups such as Sound Icon, Callithumpian Consort, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and also performs on various new music concert series in the Boston area and beyond.

A native of Norwalk, Connecticut, Stephen has received a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Connecticut, and Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Boston University. Stephen’s formative teachers include Michael Reynolds, Kangho Lee, Marc Johnson, and Rhonda Rider.

In his free time, Steve loves hiking and kayaking on the Charles River. He is also an avid baseball fan. One of his main hobbies is collecting records and other analog music ephemera.

"I have very early childhood memories of being affected by music both physically and emotionally. I want to pass on that inspiration to a new generation through music education."
