Tune Writing Ensemble is a comprehensive 10-week course dedicated to the craft of writing instrumental music. If you enjoy playing instrumental music (“tunes”), coming up with melodies, and sharing music with others, this class is for you!

This course will cover topics including melody generation practices, structure analysis of common tunes, tune archetypes, chord theory, and abstract places to look for musical inspiration. Each lesson is paired with a tune-writing assignment – participants will write a new tune every week!

Open to all instruments. You do not need any previous writing/composing experience. While this class stylistically leans bluegrass/bluegrass-adjacent, all musical styles and backgrounds are welcome.

Prerequisites:

  • Suitable for all skill levels beyond absolute beginner, students must be familiar with their instruments
  • Experience playing a variety of tunes, instrumental pieces, etc.
  • Experience with reading/writing music notation is recommended
