This ensemble welcomes all acoustic instrumentalists and vocalists to an inclusive environment that celebrates the universe of American folk music. Banjo, fiddle, guitar, harp, ukulele, double bass, mandolin, and vocalist are invited to join the class!

By highlighting the deep connections between folk/singer-songwriter, rock, blues, country, and gospel, students will acquire a basic mastery of essential techniques common to all American music.

In addition to our planned core repertoire, students will have the opportunity to suggest a tune for the group to learn to play together.

By the end of the semester, students will have acquired:

  • many hours of fun playing with others
  • a new batch of beautiful songs to play and sing
  • an understanding of the role of different instruments within an ensemble
  • a deeper understanding of the evolution of American music and its many distinctive styles
  • the ability to follow and create a chord chart
  • the ability to play songs in multiple keys

By the end of the class, we will be able to play together, confidently, songs that span the breadth of the ever-expanding American songbook. We will have fun and expand our listening skills, as well as our instrumental skillset.

This class is geared towards acoustic instrumentalists and vocalists at intermediate level and up. Instrumentalists should be comfortable playing basic chords in common keys such as C, G, D, E, A.

If you have questions about the group, we will happily connect you with the instructor.
