Private Lessons

Whether you’re a child or an adult, individual instruction is the most effective way to make significant progress in musical skills. Following a conversation with the school registrar, or school director, students are matched with an appropriate teacher who tailors instruction to best fit each student’s needs and goals. Private lessons are offered for children and adults from beginning to advanced levels in piano (classical and jazz), violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, voice, flute, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, percussion, jazz improvisation, and composition.

Composition

Composition is the opportunity for the student to use their imagination and develop the capacity to express their emotions with music. Composition lessons provide the young composer with the tools needed to translate their creative musical thoughts into written, notated music. Through writing for several different instruments, the students will learn about form, harmony, and counterpoint, as well as critically analyze masterworks by the great composers. Each student will compose a minimum of three pieces a year, and each of these pieces will get performed at a CCM recital by CCM faculty.

String Ensemble

This is a terrific opportunity for students to participate in their first orchestra and develop their ensemble skills. String Ensembles are also open to string students who are not currently taking private instruction at CCM. Note-reading experience is expected; this will also be developed during the sessions. Students are expected to make a full-year commitment to the ensemble. To arrange for a placement evaluation, please email Margaret Romero, Ensemble and Community Coordinator.

Jazz Combos

Coached by CCM faculty in a fun, low-key atmosphere, Jazz Combo is a great way to celebrate your love of this spontaneous and fun music genre as well as continuing to develop your musical skills. The immensely talented CCM Jazz faculty has performed and recorded with jazz musicians such as Grammy winners Danilo Perez and Mark Walker, and with Grammy-winning composer/conductor Maria Schneider. Also Jazz icons such as Joan Brakeen, Jerry Bergozi, and Yoron Israel. CCM invites students at all levels and instruments to consider joining one of our Jazz Combos.

Group Keyboard

Note: This is a full-year class, so spring registration is only open to returning students.

Beginner Vocals

This is an introductory course for beginning vocalists ages 6–8. This course will focus on the development of the young voice in the context of singing age-appropriate songs from musical theatre repertory. Students learn the basic elements of breathing, pitch, voice placement, range development, and tone while working towards a performance of songs from a well-known musical. The class will be given two to three ensemble pieces to work on during the 14 weeks. Short solos from the selected songs will be assigned about the third or fourth week if so desired by the student.

Hand Drumming for Kids

Children will explore a variety of percussion instruments, while learning to work in a group to expand their musical abilities. Using Tubanos, bells and shakers, rhythms from Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe will be explored. Learning to play multiple rhythms in an ensemble setting will help students sense of pulse, extend their attention span, deepen their concentration, and improve their hand-eye coordination. Sharing and listening are emphasized as well as a basic understanding of various rhythm patterns.
